Franz Josef Glacier

Franz Josef is probably a really great place if you are really into hiking, partying or have a lot of money. Being sick and a poor backpacker isn't great when you're here... I did a hike together with the westport crew, but that was about it. It was beautiful but I really didn't like it at all.

Franz Josef village is a small place just a few kilometres from Franz Josef glacier. This is probably one of the most touristy places I've been to so far. When I arrived, the first thought that crossed my mind was that there is way to many bars and activity centres compared to houses and apartments. Like I wrote before, it's probably a great place if you have a lot of money. There's a lot of different helicopter rides, glacier adventure walks and skydives you can do.

We went for a free hike to the glacier... I saw it... It was ice.. Quite a lot of ice, but that's it. I guess the fact that I was sick made the walk harder and maybe that's why I didn't enjoy it.

A good thing about my stay in Franz Josef was that I got my iPad back. The skydive place in Abel Tasman had promised to send it to the rainforest retreat, the hostel I stayed in, and the guy I spoke to thought it would be there the same day I arrived or the day after.. I had to stay 4 nights, leave the bus I was on and get the next one. I think that was a good thing though, because I got the chance to rest away my fever and achy throat.
