Te Anau, Milford Sound and Invercargill

The road to Te Anau is beautiful, well all roads in New Zealand are beautiful, but this road and the continuing road up to Milford sound are stunning. The road to Milford sound is even rated as one of the most beautiful drives in the world.

I stayed in Te Anau for 3 nights with George. Since we're both bad at planning, we had to sleep in George's tent for the first night... It was.. Hmm.. An experience... Not a very comfortable experience, but now I know how it is to sleep in a tent without a sleeping bag or pillow. Even though Te Anau is beautiful, there's not a lot to do here. We decided to do the first part of the Kepler Track. It took us about two hours to get to the start and then about four to get from the start to the first hut. It's just uphill all the way and since we were in a little bit of a hurry to get back in time, we had to walk quite fast (well fast for me, pretty slowly for George). I got the worst headache at the top, probably because we were so high up, but we made it to the hut. It was beautiful up there, but my headache stopped me from really appreciate it. After lunch at the hut, we headed back. It was so much easier walking down and the headache disappeared after half an hour or so. We walked to the start of the track and took the water taxi back. I slept so well after that day.

After 3 days in Te Anau, it was time to say goodbye to George and continue up to Milford Sound. It was raining so hard and I was really tired so the Milford cruise didn't really feel like it was worth the money. It was kind of cool to see all the waterfalls though, some of them even went up instead of down because of the wind. And it is really beautiful, even in the rain.

We slept in a cozy hostel called Gunn's camp, the rooms were small houses with fireplaces in each one. Very cute and cozy. The day after we went down to Invercargill, the ride is super long and most of us just slept through the whole bus ride.

Invercargill is not a place you have to visit, we just went there because some of the people on the bus were going to Stewart Island. Our room was tiny and didn't have any windows, not the best hostel experience of my life. But I had a good time anyways, me and Carly went for pizza at dominos... I know, but it is so cheap! We had a really interesting conversation about the differences between Sweden and USA. It was a lot more fun than it sounds like!
