La Paz and Isla del Sol

La Paz has a bad reputation of being very dangerous. It's not the safest place I've been, that's for sure and I know a few who's been robbed there, but I liked La Paz and I didn't feel threatened.

I arrived early in the morning and took a nap before going out for a free walking tour around the city center. I got to learn more about the typical clothes, offerings, how to get double the amount of juice for the same price in markets and how to get around the city. One of my favorite things on the tour was the witches market where I went back several times to buy souvenirs and check out all the dried llama fetuses (I know, disgusting). I also went to another market, together with the people I went to La Paz with from Salar de Uyuni, which felt more non touristy and it was cheaper for sure. There you could also buy llama heads...

After walking around in that neighborhood, where we were the only gringos, for a few hours we went to Cholita wrestling. Cholitas are the Bolivian women dressed in skirts and hats, with long braids and usually a baby, a sack of potatoes or something else in a piece of fabric strapped to their back. It was a very weird experience and I didn't really like it to be honest.

The second day I met up with Jen, Manon and Lexi, it was so much fun to see them again! We had great dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant, talked and had some laughs. We also went out one of the days, me, Jen and Manon. In our attempt to find the English pub and hopefully Lexi, we ended up on the dance floor in another pub with almost only locals. I thought I hated dancing before I arrived in South America, but I'm starting to realize that it can be quite fun!

After a few really good days in La Paz, it was time to move further to Isla del Sol, which is an island in lake Titicaca on the border between Bolivia and Peru. Me and Jen were heading the same direction so we decided to travel together again for a few days. We took a local mini van to Copacabana and stayed there for a night before taking the boat over to the island.

On the boat we met three Uruguayan guys, a Swiss guy and a French girl. We ended up hanging out with them for the rest of the day and shared some wine bottles in the evening. Card games, wine and never have I ever, crazy stuff.

We ended our trip to Isla del Sol, the next day, with a walk from the north part to the south part of the island, it was so beautiful but exhausting.
